Welcome.
who what where why
Welcome to Matt’s Musings, where I (Matt), muse on random topics whenever I feel compelled.
There’s no real purpose to this publication, newsletter, or whatever you wanna call it.
No schedule.
No niche.
No plan to monetize.
I’m only writing this for a few reasons:
Clarity. I think most of our beliefs go unchecked. Most of them aren’t even our own — they’re imposed upon us by our friends, family, culture, and social media algorithms. Writing is the perfect antidote because it forces you to sit down alone, think deeply, type, and figure out what you actually believe as an individual. The downstream effects of that are invaluable. You become more uniquely you, more confident in your decisions, less of a bot, more aligned with your goals, etc.
Posterity. There’s few greater gifts I can give to my 85 year old self than a catalog of my lifetime’s thoughts and experiences. The ability to look back and see what you were thinking and doing at any given age is priceless. You simply can’t buy it.
Creativity. I find writing cathartic. Sometimes it’s hard to force myself to actually sit down and write, but every time I finish a piece, I get this euphoric feeling similar to finishing a workout or sauna sesh. It’s like instead of exercising my body, I’m exercising my creative IQ. This is especially true when people like you reply with your own thoughts, so please do so.
You can consider this Substack more of a creative hobby and philosophical outlet than anything.
To give you a little context on my backstory and what I do, here’s a TLDR of my life so far:
I grew up near San Francisco, California.
Took a gap year and traveled around Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand after high school.
Went to NYU for a couple years.
Moved to Maui summer 2021 to work as a zipline guide with some friends.
Realized how much better life is by the sea, so I transferred to University of San Diego in 2022.
Lost my life savings in crypto my first semester there (dw, currently running it back).
Read The Almanack of Naval Ravikant in Guatemala that spring break (most influential book I’ve ever read — highly recommend), which helped me realize I needed to start my own online business ASAP if I wanted to be free.
Started ghostwriting (fancy way of saying I got paid to write tweets/emails for brands) at the end of 2022.
Dropped out of university while studying abroad in Buenos Aires to focus on it full-time in March 2023 (to my parent’s delight).
Scaled to 5-figures/month while living with other online business friends in Argentina, Costa Rica, and Portugal throughout the rest of 2023.
Now, I’m (slowly) traveling the world while growing an AI content company.
I know, not the most conventional path.
But in all areas of life, I think 14 and 85-year-old Matt would be stoked with this 23-year-old version of himself (maybe minus my crippling Twitter addiction).
And that’s all I care about.
So, what can you expect?
I’ve developed some unique perspectives and experiences I aim to further explore in my writing.
These may or may not include:
Internet freedom
Travel experiences
Lifestyle design
Cultural observations
AI, tech, and the future of work + the world
Philosophy and psychology
International travel and the art of perpetually living out of Airbnb’s
Running, surfing, and other health/fitness stuff I’m interested in
Questionable career decision-making
Investing and risk-taking
Of course, none of this should be taken as life, career, spiritual, or financial advice.
I am a young, inexperienced, uneducated dropout — and in 10 years time I’ll laugh at all these posts because of how hilariously wrong I was about everything.
That being said, if any of this at all piques your interest, consider subscribing below:
I tweet way more than I write these posts, so follow my Twitter in the meantime.
